Bus and Shuttle Driver's Licenses

Those who want to drive school buses, church buses, shuttles or charter buses carrying 16 or more passengers, must get a Commercial Driver's License Endorsement Class C on their regular driver's license. When you apply for a CDL, you'll be required to take a written test and a driving skills test that consists of three parts.

Study for the written test using the Alabama CDL Manual. You'll find a section specifically for drivers who transport passengers. Our Commercial Driver FAQ page has more information about the test.

Taxi Driver and Chauffeur License

Taxi drivers and chauffeurs in Alabama are required only to have a regular current, valid driver's license (called a Class D) and a business license, to operate.

Boat Driver License

Alabama requires a Vessel License for anyone 12 years and older operating a motor boat. The state provides a study manual and tests online, or you can pick up a copy of the handbook at your local driver's license office to study, then return and take your license in person. For more information, check DMV.ORG's boating information.
