Replacing a Lost Registration

Alabama requires that your owner registration papers be carried in the vehicle at all times. If you fail to produce the papers upon a traffic stop, you could be fined.
Should your registration documents go missing, you can request a replacement registration with minimal effort. You just need to visit your county's tag and title office and show proper photo ID, and the Motor Vehicle Division will issue you new papers. There is no fee for this transaction.
If the papers have been stolen, first file a police report and then provide a copy to the tag office when you request replacement papers.
Lost Tags
Replacing lost tags (license plates) in Alabama is as simple as going to your county's tag and title office, paying a $2 fee, and applying for replacement tags. If your license plates were stolen, you'll also need to file a police report and bring a copy of the report with you to the tag office.
