Other Types of Vehicles

In Alabama, any vehicle used on public roads must be registered, titled, and tagged by the Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). If you have a vehicle used only on your own property or off-road, you do not have to register, title, or tag it.

ATVs, Scooters, and Mopeds

If you will be using your scooter or moped on the road for transportation, you'll need to visit your local tag office to complete the proper paperwork and pay the appropriate fees.

All vehicles requiring registration, including motorcycles, custom-built cars, RVs and motorhomes built since 1990, and trailers more than 16 feet long go through the same process as for car registration. Just make sure you have all the needed documentation in hand when you visit the tag office, and the transaction should move smoothly.

Trailers

Trailers more than 16 feet long, including travel trailers manufactured in 1990 or later, utility trailers, and truck trailers, must be tagged and titled. The process is the same as for car registration.

Vehicles Not Requiring Titles

Alabama does not require tags and titles for the following vehicles:

• Snowmobiles

• ATVs

• Vehicles moved by animal power

• Farm machinery

• Pole trailers

• Mobile homes and trailers made in 1989 or before

• Junked vehicles

• Boats

• Special mobile vehicles

• Single-axle utility vehicles that are no more than 16 feet long

• Manufactured homes that were sold on or after January 1, 2004, placed on the owner's land, and classified as real property

• Vehicles owned by the U.S. government

• Vehicles held by a dealer or manufacturer for resale

• Vehicles owned by a nonresident

• Vehicles used to transport people or products through the state, but titled in another
