Check Your Driver's License Status
Do you know what is in your driving record? If there are mistakes, it could be costing you money on your insurance premiums or damaging potential employment opportunities through background checks.
Whenever you need or want to check the status of your driver’s license, you can order a driving record report. This record will spell out if your driver’s license is currently valid. Should your license have been revoked or suspended, the report will indicate that according to what’s on record at the DMV. This report will also show points against your license and, in some cases, information on any accidents you have had.
To obtain your record through your state DMV, you will need to fill out a Request Form and submit $5.75 to:
- Driver Record Request
- Driver License Division
- P.O. Box 1471
- Montgomery, AL 36102-1471
Processing time for your request is one week to 10 days.
You may also request the record in person at one of the following locations:
- Birmingham, Driver License Office; 908 Bankhead Hwy. West
- Dothan, Driver License Office; 5679 Montgomery Hwy.
- Foley, Driver License Office; 201 E. Section Ave., Baldwin County Satellite Courthouse
- Huntsville, Driver License Office; 1115-A Church St. Northwest
- Jacksonville, Driver License Office; 1703 Pelham Road South
- Mobile, Driver License Office; 3400 Demetropolis Road
- Montgomery, Department of Public Safety Annex; 301 South Ripley St.
- Opelika, Driver License Office; 611 S. Railroad Ave.
- Sheffield, Driver License Office; 4500 Hatch Blvd.
- Tuscaloosa, Driver License Office; 2645 Skyland Blvd.
These are physical addresses only, so please do not send mail to these locations.
For a speedier response, there are several online companies who will do the research for you. The request will cost about $20-$30, but the turnaround time can be as quick as one day.
Types of Information Available
Your driving record will show traffic violations, accidents, restrictions on your license, and court judgments against you.
Federal and state laws prohibit people from obtaining your driving record without your consent. Employers may request it, but they have to have an authorization form signed by you.
Correcting Mistakes
First, determine if the information on your record really is a mistake. Traffic tickets stay on your record for a full three years. They will only be taken off after that three year period has passed. Accidents will be reported on your license, even if you are not at fault.
If you can show documentation that a mistake has been made, contact the Driver's License Division to begin the correction process.
